Caleb closed his eyes, leaned forward under the shower, and allowed the hot spray to soak his body. He was tired, drained, and dejected. Everything was haywire, and it was all because Josh threatened Abby, causing Caleb to initiate the chain reaction to Josh’s downfall early. In two short weeks, he’d gone from being a disciplined, methodical campaign director to killing four people, sleeping with his boss’s daughter, and resigning from a job to which he’d dedicated ten years. How did that happen?

Caleb slammed his fist against the wall and gritted his teeth as pain ripped through his hand. He was annoyed with himself. This wasn’t supposed to happen, and he had no clue what to do next. Obviously, he had to clear up everything and hand it over to the Justice and the campaign team. The Justice already had access to his offshore accounts and all campaign funds. Albert was also very capable, and he could lead the campaign for the rest of the year if he stayed on message and continued to beat the GFP on corruption and the economy. The only thing the Justice didn’t have was all the dirt Caleb had amassed on potential competitors. Caleb wasn’t sure he wanted to hand that over. He’d done enough for the Justice. It was time for Annan to win this election on his own.

Caleb stepped out of the shower and grabbed a towel from the rack. He could have stayed under the shower forever, but he needed to lie down and de-stress. It’d been a hectic weekend, he’d barely had a moment to himself since the awards dinner on Friday, and now it was Sunday. He just wanted to shut down for a while and give himself a moment to regroup. He wished he was home instead of at a hotel, but after the police took the bodies from his home, he’d hired a crew to clean the blood, and that was going to take days. So, he’d gone home, packed some stuff, and checked himself into a hotel. He’d had only about six hours of sleep over the last two days. So now, all he wanted was a moment to close his eyes and sleep.

He toweled himself dry, dressed up in a t-shirt and track bottoms, and lay on the bed. After a few minutes, he picked up his phone and checked his messages. As usual, he’d missed a million and one calls. Abby had called over ten times, but he didn’t feel like calling her back. Sure, he didn’t work for her father anymore, so he could technically date her, but if he no longer worked for Annan then he was going to pack up and head back to the US. So why start a relationship? Cat had called him several times in the last hour, and she’d sent several texts saying she needed to see him. He didn’t feel like company now, but her texts sounded panicked, so he called her back.

“Caleb, I’ve been trying to reach you.
